Jan 24: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

To many, the upbeat earnestness of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart is a breath of fresh air. But the songs’ poppy sensibility belies a dark and contemplative emotional core. Formed in NYC in 2007, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart’s long, dramatic name calls to mind early 2000s emo bands. But the band has much more in common with shoegaze and dreampop. Over the years, Pains’ sound has evolved from scratchy punk to crisp pop. Their most recent release, The Echo of Pleasure, incorporates electronic elements and veers into the group into synthpop territory.

Jan 28, 9pm; RMB150 presale, RMB180 door; Yugong Yishan, see event listing (newnoise.taobao.cn for tickets)

Jan 28: Safe State

Swiss band Safe State is all about playing loud and fast old school hardcore music. The band, which started out as a side project in 2015, is comprised of members (or fomer members) of bands like Coldburn, Cataract, Lions, Keep Talking and Keep Calm. You can check 'em out at School Bar on Sunday for the second stop of their Asia tour.

Sun Jan 28, 9pm; RMB100 (door), RMB80 (presale). School Live Bar, see event listing
