Best New Beijing Restaurant Openings of 2017

We've had some great restaurant openings this year. Here are some of our picks! And if you haven't tried these places, you should.

Bottega (Shang)

Bottega's second location opened earlier this year in Beijing's hottest new complex, Shang. The slick compound can be found just north of the Liangma River, and Q Mex’s new Taqueria can be found on the first floor. The new Bottega serves all your favorites from the original – wood-fired pizzas (‘La Bottega,’ RMB120), pastas and our favorite, ravioli vegitariana, which is tasty even to non-vegetarianas. There's a great patio for eating and drinking. For drinks we suggest an Aperol Spritz or an Italian craft beer (or both if you're feeling wild).

Mojo

Hoping that Beijingers’ hearts can be reached through their stomachs is Mojo, an ambitious new Gongti venture serving high-end Italian food and aspirational living. Found at the stadium’s southwest corner, the self-proclaimed gastro lounge shares its impressive premises with a number of upscale restaurants, including Jasmine Restaurant and Lounge (which – ‘concept’ alert – is more restaurant than lounge).

Beyond Yakitori

We’re still working our way through the new restaurants in Sanlitun’s Topwin Center. If you are too, here’s a life hack: Head to the third floor and hit up Beyond Yakitori. While traditional skewers are cooked with aplomb, it’s the inventive signatures that have us excited. Marked ‘beyond’ on the menu, the restaurant’s original creations include chicken skin with ponzu sauce and orange peel (RMB22), miso cream cheese (RMB22) and a gooey yakitori Scotch egg (RMB38). Extra points for great service and the unexpectedly sumptuous salted chicken neck (RMB16).

Migas Mercado

Occupying a prime spot of the new China World Mall’s top floor, Migas Mercado is bringing Migas’ fun-loving Mediterranean vibes to the CBD. The space is inspired by the famous markets of Barcelona (‘mercado’ is Spanish for ‘market,’ FYI), and is set to feature Migas’ award-winning Spanish gastronomy and mouth-watering cocktails alongside a picture-perfect view of Beijing’s iconic CCTV Headquarters. So whether you’re stopping by for a quick lunch or long, riotous Friday night, grab a drink and enjoy.

Sheng Yong Xing

Sheng Yong Xing isn’t new. But it is new to those downtown. The Peking duck restaurant quietly debuted its first joint within the Third Ring Road earlier this summer. Sheng Yong Xing is among the very best Peking duck restaurants in the city. Yep, right there alongside Siji Minfu and Da Dong It is neither too expensive, nor too cheap. A full duck here goes for RMB198, and it’s among the best in Beijing, which has the best Peking duck in the world…

F. Bistronome

Found on the China World Mall's seventh floor, this is an impressive new offering from the team behind Maison Flo and Café Flo. On the casual-to-fine-dining scale, F Bistronome sits somewhere between its predecessors – sophisticated enough to dress up for, laidback enough to forgive you if you don’t. The restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling windows overlook one of Beijing’s most intensely urban scenes, but it does so in a distinctly Parisian manner. The cuisine strikes a similarly pleasing balance. You can, of course, indulge in the oysters (from RMB118 for three). But this place is more about hearty, unpretentious, home-style cooking, from the divine gratin dauphinois (RMB38) to the perfectly puffed soufflé (RMB78). From under RMB300 a head, the lunch and dinner sets sum up what F Bistronome does best – small plates to share followed by fish, steak and classic desserts.

Wolfgang's Steakhouse

Owner Wolfgang Zwiener is known as New York’s mustachioed meat master, a man who rose from migrant waiter to proprietor of one of Park Avenue’s hottest restaurants. The Beijing branch of Wolfgang’s Steakhouse brings American-style cuts to the capital. These cuts aren’t for the light-hearted. There are no thin slivers of boeuf with a red wine jus. Wolfgang’s specializes in great hunks of American-style steak, dry-aged on site and grilled to leave its exterior in crispy contrast to its marbled center. The signature porterhouse (RMB600 per person) is a beast of a cut that arrives juice-laden and sizzling. Other offerings include soups, salads, seafood and chops.

Jing-A Brewpub

This is definitely one of the most exciting openings of the year. There is a lot to like about Jing-A's new brewpub: it is damn big, with dining tables in the front, a taproom in the middle and a bar near the back. There’s even hallway seating, because why the hell not? Essentially, the brewpub takes all the good stuff from the original taproom – delicious beer, red bricks – and adds a heap of other great stuff, like Texas-style barbecue, room to move and double the number of bathrooms. But if you’re not into beer, there’s whisky, rum, wine and even cocktails on tap (RMB50, including mixes by Mao Mao Chong and the Tiki Bungalow). On the food side there is barbecue meat (RMB70-400), BBQ brisket sandwich (RMB70), mac’n’ cheese (RMB40), crispy Brussels sprouts (RMB30) and so much more.

Q Mex

One of the hottest openings in the new complex, Shang. The Q Mex Taqueria serves up massive margs, big-ass plates of tacos, fresh ceviche and so much more.
