8 Random Things that Aren't Allowed in Beijing During Party Congress

Beijing is on lockdown and it's all thanks to the Party Congress, which officially kicked off today. Because over 2,000 delegates are currently in the capital for the plenum, security has been heightened. In addition to causing massive delays on the metro and streets of Beijing, all sorts of random things have been banned in the capital until the meeting concludes at the end of the month.

1. Fires Near the Congress Venue

Fires near the congress venue aren't allowed until the end of October, making it pretty tough to cook meals. Numerous restaurants had no choice but to temporarily close their doors.

2. Hot Air Balloons

That's right, Beijing's skies have been rid of all hot air balloons for the next week or so. This one still has us scratching our heads.

3. Airbnbs (within the Fifth Ring Road)

All Airbnbs located in central Beijing are unavailable through October 31.

4. Delivery of Liquids, Powders and Pastes

Taobao, JD and Baopals have notified customers that their packages will be "delayed" during the plenum. Some may be delivered as soon as October 20, but many may take longer depending on the item. We're guessing that packages containing any liquids, powders or pastes will be especially scrutinized. We hope you weren't counting on alcohol delivery for your Halloween party...

5. Knives

Beijing has banned the sale of knives at some stores.

6. Drones

Remember guys: no drones till the end of the month.

7. Toy Guns

Probably not the best idea to let your kids walk around with their toy guns this week. Just sayin'.

8. Live Music

While that's not entirely true, the majority of Beijing's live music venues are closed until October 25-26. Venues include School Bar, Temple, Yugong Yishan, Dada, Modernista, DDC and more.
