It seems like Beijing is on a mad tear to build up and improve the city. In addition to demolishing and “beautifying” the hutongs, the capital is also building over 1,000 kilometers of new rail lines, upgrading high-speed bullet trains and now they’re adding a bunch of new parks to the city.
Beijing will be home to 15 new parks this year, Xinhua reports.
Once these new parks are open, the city will have so many expansive parks that 77 percent of residents will have a park within 500 meters of their homes. The goal is to increase that number to 85 percent by 2020.
The capital currently has 403 registered parks, including the ultra-popular Summer Palace and Tiantan Park (Temple of Heaven).
The majority of those parks – 363 to be exact – are located in urban areas of the city and span a whopping 13,800 hectares.
Parks are a major draw among tourists and locals alike. It is estimated that 300 million people flock to Beijing’s parks every year.
