Beijing Subway Keeps Running While Door Is Stuck Open

A Beijing subway driver decided to throw all caution to the wind and keep driving despite the fact that one of the train’s doors was stuck open. The incident occurred on the notoriously busy Batong Line -- which is connected with Line 1’s Sihui East station -- on Wednesday.

Instead of stopping the train to conduct repairs when the door malfunctioned, subway workers instead fashioned a cloth sign and hung it in front of the door, which was wide-open. The sign read: “Please stand away from the malfunctioning door.” As the subway continued east along the Batong Line, two guards stood next to the open door to prevent passengers from getting too close.

One passenger happened to capture the incident on video and later posted it on Weibo:

Despite getting a lot of criticism, one official from the Beijing Metro defended the decision:

“If this train did not run, the train behind it would have been blocked as we couldn’t have moved it out of the way. Our only choice was to do what we did, so we could move the train to a location where it could be repaired,” he said.
