Beijing's Elderly Residents Invade IKEA for Free Heat

Let’s face it, Beijing has been pretty damn cold lately. I think we’re all counting down the days until the heat comes on. (It’ll turn on this Sunday, by the way).

But until then we're doing our best to keep warm by doing things like wearing layers upon layers of clothing, snuggling up to our space heaters and mooching off of IKEA’s free heat. OK, we haven't actually done that last one, but apparently a lot of people have.

Ever since IKEA turned on its heaters a few weeks ago, an increasing amount of Beijing’s senior citizens have come up with the brilliant idea to invade IKEA to hang out in its heated areas. In fact, during the past two weeks throngs of elderly people have been spotted in the store socializing with friends, playing cards and reading, People’s Daily reports.

And the free heat isn’t the only draw. Apparently IKEA offers free water and coffee as well. Sounds like a sweet deal to us.

Until the heat does come on, don’t be surprised if you find the That’s Beijing team working diligently on our laptops from our new HQ at the IKEA cafeteria (pictured above). It will sure beat working from our frigid office.
