Oct 20: Malika Tirolien Quintet @ East Shore
Malika got her start in the Montreal jazz scene. With her soulful voice and powerful stage presence it’s now wonder that she’s gone on to experience such success. She’s performed as the lead in Cirque Du Soleil’s La Nouba and has appeared with artists such as Lara Fabian and Alain Jean-Marie. Malika’s new album, Sur La Voie Ensoleilee (‘On the High Road’) features her signature soul, jazz and hip-hop sounds. It’s no doubt going to be a good show.

Oct 21: Dr. Smartass 2-Year Anniversary Show & Record Label Launch
When it comes to Beijing’s music scene Dr. Smartass pretty much does it all, from shooting videos to playing in bands to booking shows. Unsurprisingly Dr. Smartass is now going in a whole new direction with the launch of the Dr. Smartass label. Head over to School Bar on Friday night to celebrate two whole years of Dr. Smartass. The Pumpkins, Bastards of Imperialsim, GuiGuiSuiSui and Death Narcissist will be providing the tunes. Plus, you’ll get a copy of the Bastards of Imperialism’s debut album with admission (RMB40).

Oct 22: Jazz vibraphone Brenda Ohana (Brazil)
Brazilian vibraphone player Brenda Ohana is heading to Beijing on Saturday. Her jazz-infused sound combines elements of French, Brazilian and Cuban music. And she often pays homage to musicians such as Thelonious Monk, Chico Buarque, Miles Davis, Suzana Baca, Edu Lobo and more in her music. Check her out at La Plantation on Saturday evening.

Oct 23: Demerit, Bedstars, Penecillin, The Sino Hearts, Free Sex Shop, Quick Shot
Friends of School Bar get treated pretty damn well. All the stops are being pulled out for longtime School Bar friends and Beijing music fans Rupert and Johanna, who are headed to town for a quick trip from Vienna. School Bar’s hosting an incredible night of music in honor of their visit. Demerit will be on the scene for a rare show (now based in Qingdao, they haven’t played in Beijing in months). Bedstars, Penecillin, The Sino Hearts, Free Sex Shop and Quick Shot will all be performing for this special night.

Oct 25: Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet
Yuri Honing is one of Holland’s most famed sax players. He’s played with a bunch of the greats including Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ibrahim Malooff, Craig Taborn and Paul Bley. And he’ll be landing at Blue Note on Tuesday October 25. Wolfert Brederode (piano), Gulli Gudmundsson (bass) and Joost Lijbaart (drums) will accompany Honing.
