Chefs across China have been waiting with bated breath for the Mainland to be granted its very own Michelin Guide. As of yesterday, the wait was finally over – for Shanghai’s chefs, that is. Not only was yesterday’s release of the Shanghai Michelin Guide a first for the city but it was a first for Chinese mainland as a whole.
With its very own guide, Shanghai has now officially joined the ranks of dining meccas like Hong Kong, Paris, New York and Tokyo. If you’re curious to see which Shanghai restaurants made the cut, check out our complete guide. In total, 26 restaurants made the exclusive list. Dozens of places were also awarded the Bib Gourmand, a category that highlights excellent restaurants with prices under RMB200 per person.
Here in Beijing we’re relatively unaffected by the news. But Beijingers may be interested to learn that Shanghai's branches of Da Dong Roast Duck made the list, twice, with one star each. The world-famous Peking roast duck restaurant was first established right here in Beijing back in 1985.
Beijing is also home to branches of other restaurants that were included in the Shanghai Michelin Guide, including Lei Garden (Cantonese and dim sum, one star).
Fingers crossed the Michelin Guide will hit Beijing next.
