Here’s our guide to the best live music playing in Beijing this week.
June 9: Basically Beethoven
The only classical open-mic night in town is held at The Bookworm. If you are a classically-minded musician, then what are you waiting for? If not, you can always go check out some of the city’s best classical acts.
Thurs June 9, 8-11pm; The Bookworm, see event listing for details.
June 9: Converse Rubber Tracks & School Live Free Show!
Converse Rubber Tracks and School Live Bar have come together yet again to bring the best live music to all those living in Beijing. This time around it’s all about Brit-pop. Beijing-based Britpop trio Elenore will be headlining. Rock group Secret Club, indie rockers S-Mud and Brit-pop band The Diagon Alley will also perform.
Thurs June 9, 9pm-midnight; free entry, School Live Bar, see event listing for details.
June 9-11: Ai World Music Festival 2016
There’s a lot going on this week. Not only do we have the Dragon Boat Festival but we have the 2016 Ai World Music Festival too. Ai is all about combining culture and humanity with music. This year Wang Li, Yoshio Kurahashi, Officerfishdumplings, Albert Kuvezin, Song Yuzhe, folk band Wild Children and many other great musicians will be performing.
June 9-11; RMB120 (presale) / RMB150 (door) / RMB300 (package), The Post Mountain, see event listing for details.
June 11: Derrick Big Walker and the Nightcrawlers
Derrick Roy Michael Walker – better known as Big Walker – is a man of many talents. A prodigy in singing, songwriting, the sax and harmonica, Big Walker will be jamming out at Jianghu Bar on Saturday night. Much like his talent, his style spans the genres, ranging from folk music to blues to rock and roll. The Oklahoma native will be accompanied by The Nightcrawlers.
Sat Jun 11, 9pm-midnight; RMB70RMB (door) / RMB50 (presale); Jianghu Bar, see event listing for details.
June 12: LUR @ Yugong Yishan
The Swedish group LUR loves to do things, well, a bit differently. The eclectic band is currently on a tour across China, and they’re set to bring their live-looped EM, mixed visuals and, shall we say, acrobatic stage presence to Yugong Yishan this Sunday. It’s most definitely going to be a memorable show!
Sun June 12, 9-11pm. RMB100 (door); RMB70 (presale); Yugong Yishan, see event listing for details.
