A formal investigation has been launched into one of Beijing school’s after a newly renovated synthetic racetrack was found to be emitting harmful gases and sickening children.

The play area of the Baiyunlu campus of Beijing No.2 Experimental School in Xicheng District was renovated roughly nine months ago. However, since that time numerous students have fallen ill, suffering from nosebleeds, coughs and lightheadedness, reports.

Students reportedly started having symptoms in April, causing parents to become concerned that their children were being poisoned by gases being released from the track.

After conducting tests on the track, officials found an unhealthy amount of benzene substances and formaldehyde.

The district’s education commission has now covered the track and ordered it to be demolished as soon as possible. Medical professionals are set to offer treatment to any students who are exhibiting symptoms.

Similar instances have occurred in schools in other provinces, and officials have reported that thorough investigations will be conducted at other facilities.

According to the Ministry of Education schools do have to follow certain requirements when installing synthetic racetracks. However, these rules are not always implemented by education officials in certain areas, he said.
