The 2016 Hugo Award finalists’ announcement this week saw Chinese writer Hao Jingfang nominated for her novelette "Folding Beijing."
One of five candidates for the Best Novelette category, the science fiction novel was first published in e-magazine, Uncanny Magazine.
"Folding Beijing" combines physic, economics and class systems within universal themes of love, loss, and family, according to Uncanny Magazine.
Hao Jingfang, who has degrees in physics, economics and management, won first prize in the New Concept Writing Competition in 2002. In addition to short stories and essays, Hao has published two full-length novels.
The Hugo Awards, established in 1953, are annual awards for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements. Named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine Amazing Stories, it is one of the most prestigious honors for science fiction and fantasy writing.
Fellow Chinese writer Liu Cixin won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Novel with the first of his sci-fi trilogy, The Three-Body Problem.
The winners of the 2016 Hugo Awards will be announced on August 20.
