6 Places to Celebrate St Patrick's Day in Beijing

Beijing loves an excuse to drink beer – and man, is St. Patrick’s Day an excuse to drink beer. (Our apologies to anyone who actually attends the mass of St. Patrick on this day.) This year’s celebrations include beer, music and combinations of beer and music. Oh, and one comedy night. Let’s begin.

St. Paddy’s Day at Jing-A Taproom
Mar 17, 4pm-midnight

Guinness be damned. Jing-A is serving up deals on its own stouts. It’s buy-two-get-one-free on Black Velvet Vanilla Stout, Eightfold Path Imperial Stout and Imperial Stormtrooper Stout. Bring two friends or drink all three yourself, whatever.

St. Patrick’s Day with Blackwater
Mar 17, 9.30pm-midnight

School Bar is hosting Beijing-based Irish band Blackwater for a night of foot-stomping traditional music. Blackwater is the real deal – they performed for the president of Ireland in 2010.

St. Patrick’s Celebration Week at Paddy O’Shea’s
Mar 15-20

Beijing’s most popular Irish pub is partying for days. Tuesday, Irish band Cuisle will play (8pm). Wednesday, you can win Irish prizes if you do well in a St. Patty’s-themed pub quiz (8.30pm). Thursday, the big day, Paddy’s will open at 11am (!) for a day-and-night-long party. Friday, Blackwater’s playing (8pm, see above), and Saturday, Paddy’s will show the Ireland vs Scotland round of the 6 Nations tourney. Sunday is a St. Patrick’s edition of the Hidden City Game (1pm). We’re exhausted just from reading about all this.

“F*ck the Rules”
Mar 17, 9pm-midnight

The above is an actual event name, not us espousing our anti-establishment philosophy midway through this article. Five local bands will be rocking out at Yugong Yishan: Jump The Fence, Joker's Belief, Paper Tigers, One Hung Low and The Rebel 5.
RMB80 (RMB60 at the door), see a listing for Yugong Yishan here

St. Patrick’s Day at Great Leap
Mar 17, 11.30am – late

The stouts will be flowing at Great Leap Brewing in honor of Ireland. Great Leap brews four varieties of the dark stuff, and you can grab four pints for RMB100 all day.
free entry, see listings for Great Leap Brewing here

St. Paddy's Day Comedy Night at The Garage
Mar 15, 8.30-11pm

The Garage is bringing in Irish comedians to make your St. Paddy’s a little funnier. The Shunyi sports bar will also be offering a festive deal – an extra RMB80 gets you a pint of Guinness and Irish beef stew in a bread bowl.
RMB260, see a listing for The Garage here (call 134 3979 6359 to reserve tickets)
