There’s much more to feminism in China that the Leftover Monologues and cliches about holding up half the sky. That’s why we’re pleased to learn of the return of the China Women’s Film Festival, which is taking place for a third year between Sep 19-27.

Featuring film screenings, forums and discussions, the festival seeks to examine gender inequality and women's issues, as well as celebrating the achievements of female directors and actors. This year’s program includes a wide range of films spanning documentaries and feature films. Highlights include Boxing for Freedom, a documentary about a female boxer in Afghanistan and Chinese feature film Lotus (pictured above).

Screenings will take place at locations across the city, including UCCA, the Penghao Theater, the Crossroads Centre, the Swedish and Polish embassies, the Beijing American Center and Gangcuo Cafe, before the festival moves on to six other cities in China.

For more information on the festival and full program, visit www.cwff.net. As you’ll see from the humorously superfluous ‘ticket’ section on their website, all events are absolutely free.
