"The name Zarah is of Arabic origin and is said to mean 'in flower,' as in to flourish. In four years living in Egypt, I witnessed the birth of hope (like a young flower) after the Revolution of 2013, but also the eventual wilting of these dreams (the eventual let-down) of post-revolutionary politics there. This exhibition captures the clash between Egypt's rich cultural tradition and its modern reality of political stagnation. Despite scenes of worsening poverty, the hospitality of the Egyptian people and the natural beauty of the deserts, coasts and ancient temples still captivates tourists and residents of this special Middle Eastern land.”
